About

Hi. I'm Buzz Garwood, the middle school technology teacher at Home Gardens Academy in the Corona-Norco Unified School District in Corona, California.

I've used popsicle sticks throughout my 20-year (and counting) career as a teacher. Only now, my popsicle sticks are digital -- and they can do a whole lot more than just display names. Shouldn't your popsicle sticks do more?

I've earned numerous local, national, and commercial grants for innovative uses of technology and multimedia in the classroom.

  1. I just wanted to say that I love the idea of using Pick Stick in the classroom. The question stems are an added bonus. Another great App for my Ipad. Can't wait for the Android version. Wait! Does it exist already?

  2. The Android version does not exist yet, but I recently finished the design and sent the drawings to my developer. I'll keep you posted on my blog.

  3. Is there a limit to the number of sticks you can input? I teach 3 - 5 music and would like to use this app if possible. I see 510 students! Thanks!

    1. 510 is a lot of students, but Stick Pick should support that many. My developer informed me there is no limit.

      Thanks,

  4. Very cool! Thanks! I have every kid in the school. I already use sticks (real ones) in my class, but I like the idea of being able to have the question stems. Especially with common core and having to also teach math and literacy concepts in my class. Thanks again!

    1. Let me know how it works out for you. You may set the record for most students added to Stick Pick ever!

  5. I will! That's the joys of teaching a "special." I get to see every kid in the school!

  6. Are there any plans to add a "link to Dropbox" feature? I would love to be able to import a roster. I teach HS and have 150 students. I would by this app if I only had to import 8 lists rather manually input 150 individual students.

    1. Great idea! Later this year, this is a real possibility.

  7. Here's another question for you...once I enter the students, am I able to move them from one class to another? I would like to begin entering the students into the app this summer, but I don't know which teachers they will be with until later in the summer. Thanks again!

    1. The ability to "change class" is a feature I intend to add, hopefully later this year. Right now, my developer is busy working on the Android version, as well as the iPad version (with similar functionality as the iPhone version). Realistically, we probably won't be able to get to the "change class" feature until after summer...but maybe...

  9. I would also love to see a few additions to the app. I teach 5th grade English and tech and would love to duplicate classes and add kids already entered to other classes. For example, I teach the whole 5th grade and need one group with everyone for grade-level activities. I also teach the same kids in 4 sections so need class groups. Right now, I have to enter the kids twice to do what I want.

I would also love to see other info on students and the ability to pick using that (ie. gender). It would be nice to have the app alternate boys and girls in the pick. Thanks for producing a great app! I look forward to more updates.

  10. I am excited that this app came to Android as I have been searching for something like this to use in the classroom. I have been reading through the blog, the video and I cannot figure out how to upload a class list rather than add 200 names by hand. Please advise how to do this, thanks!

  11. Would you consider updating Stick Pick to allow using it in Split View for iOS? I'm using Notability quite a bit and being able to use it and be able to randomly pick a student without leaving Notability would be great.

  12. Is this app available for use on Chromebooks?

  13. Do you have a Windows version of the app?

  14. Would also love a windows or ChromeBook version!!!
