FAQ

What I do if it crashes?

Shoot me an email, but please understand that crashes are generic iPhone problems that can occur in any iPhone software, from Safari to Maps. While you’re working with an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad application the device may suddenly toss you back to the Home screen. When you return to the program, you may further find that some of your recent changes have been lost. After being dumped back Home, you should simply return to what you were doing and hope the crash does not recur. If the same crash does happen again, try restarting your iPhone (described next). This often helps because many crashes are caused by a combination of events that won’t reoccur in exactly the same way after a restart.

To restart an iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button (the physical button at the top of the iPhone until a red (and white arrow) slider (adjacent to the words “slide to power off”) appears on the screen. Drag the slider to power off your device. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until the Apple logo appears. Wait a few seconds for iPhone’s startup sequence to finish, and you should be back at the Home screen. While I refer to this procedure as a “restart,” some Apple documentation refers to it as a “reset.” I prefer “restart” both because it is consistent with the same action on a computer and because it avoids confusion with other meanings of “reset” for the iPhone.

If your device is really confused, even holding down the Sleep/Wake button may have no effect. In such cases, you can generally force the iPhone to restart by holding down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons simultaneously for around 10 seconds. Although I have no official confirmation of this from Apple, I expect that the difference between a normal and a forced restart is that the former restart is more “graceful,” making sure that all files that should be closed before restarting have done so.

  1. I have Stick pick on my Ipad and Iphone. Is there a way that they can share the info. I entered all my students names and info using the ipad but need to get it over to my iphone too.

    Thanks for your help

    1. This is a great idea, Amanda. Just hang in there: iCloud support with syncing across devices is definitely in the future -- there are a couple other features "in the cue" but maybe in the winter or spring.

  2. That was going to be my exact question too, having just entered all the names in my iPad, but want to access them on my iPhone too. Great that there will be an update for the iPad too.

  3. Once a level is selecting on the Bloom's Mode, is there a way to edit it for future classes?

  4. I have 510 students and just entered them all on my iPad. I also want to be able to login and get them on my iPhone. I would think if you created an account (which right now is not done) then the sharing between devices would be easier. I would also like to be able to move students into different classes as they sometimes change. Next year, I will have to move each student to a new class. It would be really helpful to have a dropdown menu that would allow for student labeling such as 1) chemistry 2) chemistry II 3) physics and so on. Do you see these options in the near future? I would also like to customize my own questions...

    1. There is a little check box on the stick with a green check mark. That is actually the "assess" button. Tap that button whenever you wish to record student responses.

  6. I just loaded in one class, but though the sound and shake settings are turned to on, they won't work I even tried to power down my iPad and turn it back on. Any suggestions?

    1. Volume is set to high and works with all other apps. I have checked the settings within Stick Pick to "on" as well. It still is not working.

  8. I have searched and not been able to find the capacities for this. All the name generators for my Smart board will only hold 36 kids.
Lets say a fellows classes are forty strong and he has five of them- will this do the trick? Also, have we reached the point of Ipad/Iphone connection yet?
    Thanks in advance

  9. My husband uses this app everyday and I'm going to start using it this school year. We were discussing the usability of Stick Picks and both decided we like the question stems but would like to be able to switch between them more easily. For instance, when we set up a student ask which category (Bloom's, Bloom's Revised, or ESL) and then when we pick the name ask what level. We have both shown the app to several other teachers who are going to start using it.

    1. I agree with this - one thing I have to track is how many higher/lower level questions the kids are getting right. I'd love to be able to switch on the fly, like having an option to change the level of Blooms/Bloom's Revised/etc. as I ask the question.

Love the app, though! The Bloom stems set it above and beyond the rest.

  10. I had purchased Stick Pick and installed it with all of my students names (all 465!)on my school ipad. I loved it! When I had to turn in my old ipad for a new ipad 2, after syncing with my itunes account, Stick Pick did not sync!

    1. Sync is coming for iOS soon. Thanks for your feedback. I'm working on the most intuitive User Experience as not to alienate "technophobic" teachers. Sorry for the hassle of inputting one by one!! I feel your pain!!!

  11. Can we mass input students using excel or something? Can students be switched between classes and is there syncing between decides? I want to know before I buy.

    1. "Import CSV from Dropbox" is coming very soon. Users will be able to create a file in excel or numbers, etc., and export it as a CSV file. They will then simply upload the file to Dropbox and import it. No more typing hundreds of names.

Sync across iOS devices is coming soon, too.

Thanks for your questions...I recommend using the iOS version if syncing between iOS devices is an important feature as that will come before Android to Android syncing or iOS to Android syncing.

The syncing cross-platform syncing issue will come, but it's more complicated than iOS to iOS syncing. I'm certain we'll address that issue in the future.

  13. Are there any plans to allow an import? I would rather not type in 150 names on a touch screen.

  14. Is there a way to view and email all student's data reports in one document rather than one at a time?

  15. Is there a way to change the level of Bloom's when the student's name is drawn instead of their being a default level of questions?

  16. I love Stick Pick, but since updating my iPad to OS 7, it crashes whenever I try to go to roster. What can I do to fix that? Restarting does not help and it happens every time. Thanks for any help you can give.

  17. I have uploaded my rosters into dropbox but I am having trouble connecting for the import. When I enter my username and password it is either returning me to the login screen or telling me "there is only a limited number of tokens while this app is in the development stage." Any advice? With 120 students, I'm invested in the import working!

    1. Update Regarding Dropbox Error Message: Resolved. You should be able to import your students into Stick Pick via Dropbox now. I was just informed that they made an adjustment on their end, so you should be fine. Sorry for the inconvenience, and please let me know if you have any other questions.

  18. Regarding Dropbox Error Message: Sorry for your inconvenience. Here's the situation: I'm waiting for Dropbox to essentially "flip a switch" that will take Stick Pick out of "Development" mode and into "Production" mode on their back end - a step I am learning I should have initiated when I submitted the latest update to Apple. I have been informed that as soon as Dropbox does this, I can have unlimited users; apparently my user base (you being one of them) have hit some kind of "development" cap. It could be any minute and I will email you as soon as this feature becomes functional and will post the same to my support site.

Until then, thank you for your patience. In the meantime, please consider inputting a few students manually and trying it out to get used to the interface. Again, I apologize for the delay- it shouldn't be too long...

  26. Hi Buzz,
I think that this app is amazing! Thank you for sharing this with the world. The question stems are great for encouraging higher-order thinking and differentiation in the classroom. I would use this app even more if there was an option to add your own questions for multiple subjects/topics. Is this a possibility? Thank you in advance for your consideration.
