How To Use

Have you ever used equity sticks (popsicle sticks with each student’s name written on them) to ensure that you are calling on all your students equally? Wouldn’t it be great if your sticks could do more? What if your they could help your students build higher order thinking skills? Or what if they could help your English language learners improve their English? With Stick Pick, you can!

Getting Started
You can use Stick Pick as a random name generator, but the true power of Stick Pick is its ability to display “question stems” that are uniquely tied to each learner’s cognitive or English language ability level. You can even track your students’ performance! For your English speakers, it may be helpful to have on hand relevant student data, such as your students’ recent overall language arts standardized test scores. As for your ESL (English as a Second Language) learners, you should know each student’s current English language level. In California, it’s known as their CELDT (California English Language Development Test) score. It used to be levels 1-5, but the revised version is 1-3. Stick Pick has retained levels 1-5 at this time.

Create a Class

Renaming a class is simple, too. Just tap the name of the class you wish to rename. Then, touch the Settings tab at the bottom of your screen. In Settings, tap “Rename Class.” In the space, provided, type the new name for this class. To create a new class, simply touch the “+” button at the top right corner of the “Classes” screen. You will be prompted to enter a name for this class. Press “Save” when done. There is no limit to the number of classes you can have!

Select a Mode

After you enter a student's name, you will be immediately prompted to select a "question stem" mode for this student. For your English speaking population, "Bloom's" and "Bloom's Revised" modes are great for developing higher order thinking skills. "ESL" mode is ideal for supporting English language acquisition among your English language learners. Select "Stick Only" mode if you do not intend to ask questions to a given learner. 

Select a Level

Once you have selected a mode, you will immediately be prompted to choose a level for this learner.

Bloom's: In "Bloom's" mode, you choose from among six levels of cognitive development, listed from lowest (Knowledge) to highest (Evaluation). The levels are: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation.

Bloom's Revised: In "Bloom's Revised" mode, you can choose from among six levels of cognitive development, listed from lowest (Remembering) to highest (Creating). The levels are: Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating.

ESL: In "ESL" mode, you can choose from among the five stages of English language acquisition, listed from lowest (Beginning) to highest (Advanced). The levels are: Beginning, Early Intermediate, Intermediate, Early Advanced, and Advanced.

Once your can (class) is filled with sticks (students), you can tap the screen, shake it, or swipe "up" to select a stick, causing it to appear at the top of your screen.
